The story
Biography
Butter Thieves is a genre-blending musical project led by Janardana Das (Jamil Apostol), fusing traditional kirtan with reggae, hip-hop, and global electronic influences. Rooted in the bhakti-yoga tradition and devotion to Kṛṣṇa, the project brings ancient mantra into modern festival culture through rhythm, movement, and collective experience.
What began as a devotional expression has evolved into a high-energy, internationally touring act known for transforming audiences into active participants. Rather than a passive concert, a Butter Thieves set becomes a shared experience — where chanting, dancing, and connection dissolve the line between performer and crowd.
With performances spanning major festivals, conscious gatherings, and global stages, Butter Thieves has built a reputation for bridging worlds — honoring the depth of traditional kirtan while making it accessible and engaging for modern audiences.
